A Summer in L.A.

Hey guys,

I think it’s about time to update you on what’s going on in our camp. For the first time, we are excited to be able to focus on the music, with few distractions. The only thing that will get in the way will be ourselves, which people seem to let happen pretty often (not excluding myself). Thanks to our manager, Sara, and the assistance of many others, we will be living in L.A. writing new music for the next few months. We plan to have the songs done and recorded by summer’s end. We’re very excited about where the songs are going, and what they will be by the time they reach your ears.

We want to keep everyone updated with the writing process throughout the summer. We’re going to be updating our blogs weekly, and putting up pictures and video of the practice space and whatever else we’re up to. Definitely check back often.

I speak for all of us when I say that it’s not easy being away from family and friends while living out here. It’d be hard to explain in a blog how things have worked out for this band up until this point, but sometimes things just seem to fall into place, as cliche as it may seem. The fact that we’re actually in California getting ready to record another album makes us that much more excited to make music for you all.

Here are just a few pictures from the practice space. Thanks so much for the support!

A few shows left before L.A.

It’s been a long week in Texas.

I don’t know what you have heard about Texas, but there are some of the kindest people in the country here. We started out in Houston, then headed to Austin, Granbury, and Arlington. In each of these cities (besides Arlington I guess) we stayed with the most generous people. It’s amazing how much people want to lend a hand when they barely know who you are. In Houston we stayed with our good friends the Nespers. Rene and Dave took care of us for the second tour in a row, offering up their home, feeding us, and giving us whatever medicine/supplements our bodies could ever need. Rene gave me an entire bottle of organic pills that are supposed to help arthritis (I was complaining about my elbow and fingers hurting). Oh, and their dog was even excited to see us…

The next few nights we stayed with Steve Conrad, who has become one of our good friends over the past year. He works for Apple, and really helps us out whenever any of our stuff needs repairing or replacing. He let us stay with him in Austin, after showing us around town. He is wise beyond his years. He left us by saying, and I’ll paraphrase, “When you guys are California, remember that you’re there for each other. Take care and of each other, and don’t get distracted by other things.” He said it more eloquently than that, but you get the picture. The next night we stayed with another Steve in Granbury. He and his wife (and kids) had to their home before the show and fed us a 5 course meal. Including some red, red, wiiiiiinneeee (Shea’s been singing that all tour. He’s a big UB-40 fan). Steve and Steve, you guys rule.

Anyways, yesterday we played at 6 Flags over Texas. Highlight of the day: line cut passes. We went on some boss roller coasters, fo’ free, without waiting in line. However, it was probably top 5 most awkward shows I’ve ever played. The most random assortment of people walking by the stage. Grandma’s, 10 year olds, people that definitely don’t enjoy rock and roll, batman, etc. The highlight of the show itself was Brendan replacing the word “drunk” with “crunk” during our song Surroundings, in an effort to protect the innocent young kids. The thing about this is that I believe the word “crunk” is even more implicative than the former.

This is the type of flower that Brendan dreams of giving girls…

We only have about a week until we reach our destination. We’re playing in San Diego on the 30th, and then it’s off to L.A. to start pumping out some new jams. We’re excited about being able to work on songs with the stress and time commitment of work and school. We feel like the producer we will probably be working with will help us get the sound we’re going for. We’re excited about seeing what will happen this year. I’ve been trying my best to keep what’s important in focus. It’s easy to get lost in the work and stress involved in making/playing music, sometimes leading me to forget why I wanted to do it in the first place. Life is really short, and as time goes by I realize more and more that it’s important to spend the little time you have here doing things for others, and loving others, spending time with the people you love. Emo sounding, I know, but I’ve realized how many people get sick so young. If that happens to me, that’s fine, but if you look at life with a little foresight it makes you want to waste as little time as possible. “The longer you wait, the more it goes to waste” -good lyric from a great album by Circa Survive.

Anyways, that’s probably enough for today. Gotta shower up before jumping in the van for 5 hours to drive to Tulsa, OK. P.S. I slept in the van the other night…pretty hot in these rhinos:

Arkansas ain’t no fun…

We just arrived at a random Ramada in Texarkana, Texas. 7/10 on the crime scale. Anyways, to justify this post title, I’ll post a few pictures to start off. These pictures were taken in bathrooms across Arkansas.

Annoying that I can’t get that picture to center. Usually I would think that this was at least witty and worth a chuckle. However, the attendant (with a concerned tone and look on his face) offered up a, “be careful,” as my brother exited the convenience store. Leads me to believe someone was serious.

The last few days off were a great time. We stayed with Cody’s sister in Nashville. She was a great host and a really nice person in general. We played 3 hours of basketball. Cody, Carter, and I took 2 out of 3 games from Dave, Brendan, and Shea. I’d consider it an upset. No big deal. We won a round of root beers next time we go to Chili’s. No big deal. Actually it is a big deal.

It was good to get some rest, and it was cool being back in Nashville again for sure. It’s a completely different world in that city, music wise. Everybody plays, and everybody is good (that’s the impression I got from the way people talk). Yet, somehow this kid we met got paid $1,500 to play a gig last week. Sign me up.

Off to Houston tomorrow. Will update again soon.

Recently watched: Pride and Glory (another Ed Norton classic). Slightly similar to the Departed, in a more New York, not Boston way.

Listened to: 10 hours of music today. Lot of Beatles (I’ve Seen a Face is the song of the day). The new Minus the Bear- OMNY makes for some great driving music. Closed it out with 60 minutes of saxophone soloing as I dozed in and out in a captain’s chair.

Read list: “A Million Miles In a Thousand Years” by Donald Miller

Currently chewing: Gum, and I don’t know where to put it. Goodnight my friends. I love you.

Adios East Coast

We just got back to Cody’s former home in Georgia, after a fun show at a great venue in Marietta. Salt and Vinegar chips were waiting for us at the house, but Shea ate them all…so, so much for that. My favorite chips, no big deal. The show was solid except for a few technical difficulties. My bass drum beater (the thing that hits the bass drum) fell out of my bass pedal last night, and tonight the darn chain snapped mid song, resulting in a horrible sounding mid section of a song, and an absurdly frantic look on ryan’s face. Back in the day I’d be pissed for a few days, but I’ve learned to roll with punches and know that it happens…but it better not happen again.

Tomorrow we will be leaving the east coast and start our trek out west. We’re playing Birmingham tomorrow, and Nashville on Monday. A change of scenery will be nice for a little while. It’s hard to believe that we’ll be in Texas mid week. I pray that it’s not 100+ degrees every day like last time. Our AC works, but it’s definitely not the Armani of ACs. Truth be told, Dave has been driving a lot, and I’ve kind of been taking shotgun more than I should. Selfish I suppose. Anyways, the AC is arctic in the front, but for some reason doesn’t reach the back seat. So usually I bundle myself up with a hoodie because I’m freezing, and the guys in the back are struggling hard.

Anyways, I’m too tired to even think about what I could say, so that’s it for now. A terribly unimportant blog to say the least. Hope everyone reading this is doing well…I miss you.

Love you guys,

ryan

Back to shows tomorrow…

Well, we’ve had a couple of great days off in Charleston, South Carolina. As much as I love playing for people, it’s a blessing not to have to unload that trailer for a few days. Also, Cody’s parents have been treating us like kings (and queens…carter & sara). I don’t even know the names of the meals Laura made us the last few days, but they were damn good. It reminded me a lot of home and how much love and effort goes into a meal made by Ma Dukes and my grandmother. Seafood gumbo, and some great chicken concoction. I’m starving.

So far tour has been great. Every time I travel with these guys I realize how lucky I am to have such great friends. Even though I’m significantly older, cooler, wiser, and better looking than the others, I still learn a lot from them every day. Seriously though, nothing like being able to talk to your friends about whatever is on your mind. Which is a lot…

Starting tomorrow we have a solid string of about 16 shows heading out to California. Greatly looking forward to May and June out there.

In case you haven’t seen it yet…here is a picture of our trailer. I still haven’t decided if it’s the most rock and roll thing I’ve ever seen, or the least. Needless to say, we are not called “The Pecos River Band”.

Tour Blog 2.0- This is all I did yesterday:

chillin golf

Yesterday, Sunday April 11 2010, I watched the entire final round of The Masters. This is a tradition for me and has been for years. Not one other person in the house had any interest in watching one of the most celebrated sports traditions in the universe. So, as you can see from the picture, I dragged a recliner in from the garage (which held all furniture so that “party games” could be played the other night- see previous blog) and watched 6 hours of golf by myself. No regrets. Mickelson took home the trophy. Congrats Phil, way to represent leftys.

Today we will be driving to Cody’s dad’s house in South Carolina. It’s only a 6 hour drive or so, so it shouldn’t be too bad. I kind of hope I’m driving so that I don’t have to participate in the radio interview we have scheduled with some station in San Francisco. A) I sound weird on the phone and B) My hearing isn’t top notch so I say “what’s that?” or “come again” way too often.

After a few more days off we have a nice string of shows scheduled, including Nashville, which I am very much looking forward to.

I hope all is well with everyone.

Much love,

ry

2 Shows down. 15 to go.

Where to start. Well, first I am happy to say that a lot of the information in my previous post is now outdated. Shea is back playing with the band, and we couldn’t be happier about it. It’s great to have one of my friends, and one of the best guitarists I know, back on the road with us. Shea, don’t quit again.

Anyways, the first two shows of this tour have been amazing. The kickoff show in west palm beach was one of the best times I’ve had in a while. I’m so grateful for all of the people who cared enough to come out and support a band that they have probably never heard before. Thank you guys so much. I’m going to miss everyone a lot, and can’t wait to go back down there once this trip is over.

Show number two was at the university of south florida last night. Good times. Big crowd. We had a chance to hang with the guys from The Maine a bit. Awesome dudes who write some catchy tunes. If you’ve never heard them check em out www.myspace.com/themaine

Tour has been pretty relaxing so far. The last few days we got to hang out with the fam in Tampa. It was great to see them…it had been 8 months which is far too long. Tonight we’re staying with some friends in Orlando. We have a few days off before the next show in S.C. Supposedly these fellas are throwing a house party tonight, and there are over 100 confirmed guests on the facebook event thing. Reminder to self: put all valuables in the trailer. Sleep will likely be impossible…so I may make my way out to the stealth tiara for some good old fashion fold down bed cuddling with Shea.

Things have changed…

Hey friends,

I haven’t been updating this at all, since it’s sort of a tour blog, and well, we’re not on tour right now. But, I figured I’d update, mostly for my own memories down the road. I think I’ll start updating more often.

Anyways, since tour ended we’ve been renting a house in West Palm Beach, FL, working a restaurant/bar (yes, all of us) in an effort to save up for our 2010 plans (touch on this later). It’s been pretty great down here. We’re living with 5 guys (well 5 and a half, because there’s a 6th gentlemen living in a van in our driveway…but you know he uses the utilities and stuff) is pretty interesting. It’s not all dudes all the time, which is obviously a a plus. We all get along pretty well, which is great. We’ve been meeting a lot of new friends and hanging out with a good group of people. Of course, it’s not going to be easy saying “bye for now” to friends when we hit the road in April…never is never will be.

Unfortunately, our good friend Shea won’t be joining us on the road anymore. We will miss him greatly, and who knows what will happen down the road, but he felt like he needed to be dedicating his time towards other things right now. We’re really happy about our good friend Cody Hunt joining us on guitar. We’ve known him for a while now, and we feel like it’s going to be a great fit, as a friend and musician. He’s a passionate guy, and I’m excited for people to meet him on the road. We’ll be hitting the road with a bunch of new songs in april- dates coming soon- and will be heading to L.A. to record in May. We’re going to be staying with our amazing new manager Sara. She’s amazing, and has been working really hard to get things rolling for us. We’re really excited about the new songs, and about having her on board to help us get the songs to other people.

Anyways, that seems like enough for now. Heading to Ft. Lauderdale with Dave and Cody in a few to pick up a new PA system. Practice tonight, February 3, 2010.

Talk to you soon.

Two days off in GA

Helloo,

Just hanging out at Patrick and Mike (and spouses) from Showbread’s house in Guyton, GA. They are nice enough to have us here for our few days off before we finish the last 3 weeks of the tour. We’re going boating and tubing out on a lake tomorrow with Josh and Patrick’s dad, who also made some killer southern Chili tonight. It was great. This tour is too much fun.

Last night was a fun show in West Columbia, SC. My buddy Gina from MA and her friends came out, but missed our set. bummer. sorry about that. And some of our friends from Florida came up to hang out…it was great to see them as well. We all got a hotel after the show and had some quality chill time. Wish we had more time to spend with them…

Shea turns 21 at midnight tonight. Happy birthday sir. Happy birthday.

We just started a discussion forum on our website. Anyone can go there and talk about anything from the band, to their new favorite movie, to questions or ideas about life in general. I’m looking forward to getting that thing hoppin’. It’s http://forum.thegallerymusic.com . Check it out and sign up if you’d like.

Note to Carter: you better sell 100+ at the next show or you’re going home

Really looking forward to getting down to Florida and hanging out with my brother Sean and a bunch of friends. Should be a great time. Well,

ry

(A little more than…) Half way done

Hey hey,

It’s been a while since I updated this… surprisingly free time is slightly hard to come by. Although our “job” is to play for 30 minutes every night, there’s not too much downtime throughout the day, and when there is jumping on a computer doesn’t sound too appetizing. What was appetizing was the baked ziti we just ate, along with rolls that melted in my mouth.

Carter is massaging my shoulders right now…he really wants me to get off his computer, not happening.

Anyways, tour has been great…we’re about half way done right now and still have a lot to look forward to. Besides the shows, next weekend we have some friends coming up from Florida…they are coming to the show Saturday night in S.C. After that we’re heading down to GA to hang out at the guys from Showbreads houses and theyre taking us out tubing on a lake with a little BBQ action. Next weekend should be chill.

Last night we had no place to stay so those of us that are 21 went to a bar to try to meet someone in hopes that they would invite us to sleep at their house. Didn’t happen. We slept in the van. Everyone at the bar was in a bad mood because their beloved Ohio State Buckeyes lost. Boo hoo. Weirdest place ever…so many bros.

Anyways, we’re going to be going on in a few minutes…I’ll ramble more later tonight maybe…this one is lame.

Talk soon,

ry
